The students will be given a short reading before each class. The readings will range from fairy tales to comics to finally, Shakespeare. We will then have an open, student-led discussion on the reading. The discussions will be mainly led completely by the students, really focusing on the fact that all of their thoughts on the text are valid and there is no right answer when it comes to literature.
Learn how to close read and think about a text, going beyond just reading into the realm of understanding. The focus of close reading in this course will be more on the moral and life questions the texts offer us. For example, what does reading Spiderman tell you about life?
Learn to analyse a text within the form of literature it belongs to. For example, what does reading Spiderman tell you about the form of comic books?
Gain a broader understanding of what counts as literature, and be able to enjoy engaging with it by connecting it with their personal experiences.
